Hello,   :lol: I am a Japanese shadowrun player.  I made Chinese characters. I want to know their character names are strange.
 male
 逢 世嘉
 山 希朗

female
 闘（斗） 凝雨　（I know 斗 is old family name of 楚 ）
 麹　可琳　
　
　Are their name strange or old fashion ?

The family name is kind of strange

Normaly there is a list called “百家姓”(Hundred family name)，this list contains usual family name in Chinese

逢、山、麹、斗are real family names。but very few people use them。try something more common

世嘉というのはsega、変な感じがするけど問題なし
逢は確かに苗字だけど、けっこう古い苗字だから、現実ではあんまり見ない
山は炎帝の子孫の苗字、問題がなし。その希朗はなんかどこかで見たことがあるの気がする…本来の意味はたぶん希望を持っている陽キャラとか、よくわからない
凝雨は雪のこと、昔の人は雪が雨からできた結晶とおもうから、雪に凝雨の名前をつけた
もう一人の女性の名前は四十年前のヒロインっぽいだな、特別な意味はなし

But surnames sound strange, there family names exist but are rarely seen.

if you need some naming advice:

Most of names belong to a few common surnames like 王, 李, 孙, 刘, 张. I guess you already know it and are not satisfied with these, so...

Well, there are some surnames that sound fancy so are popular for naming fictional characters. 叶 for example, others include 楚, 萧, 苏, 夏, my personal pick is 秦 for no particular reason. Some 俺tueee系 characters are named 龙, but it becomes a cliché and a meme now so I’d rather not do this.

If you wanna more power then you can just use compound surnames like 欧阳, 慕容 and so on. This is a dark art that can easily make your character sounds overly fancy so be careful.

And I have to say, as you are creating a character, family name like "趙銭孫李" is quite normal.
If you are going to creat a beloved character, maybe you would like to make him/her a little different.
Even if you use  "慕容欧陽"  which is really cool in a Chinese TRPG designing, as other Japanese don't know "they are cool in China", maybe not a good idea.

I guess the most important point is to find out why karl800 would like to use such family names. Then the advices would be reliable.

 Yes, I think 王, 李, 孙, 刘, 张 are so common as runner's name.  I think 浮华的 names are better. So I used those family names.

 I named my Chinese character from "孔門十哲","封神演義","三国志","凌煙閣二十四功臣","雲台二十八将" and "水滸百八星".

 But, I understand some of their family name is old fashion.

 I made one more male character.

 謝 洪才　(mystic adept)

分かりました。要は、「日本人に珍しい感」「中国語でも変ではない」その二つの条件だよね～

「謝」は見慣れる苗字として別にいいけど、「洪才」は前世紀の命名趣味で、急におじさんっぽいｗｗｗｗ
「世嘉」は使わない。理由はSEGA。だが、「逢」という苗字を使っている人がまだいると思う。セーフ。
「希朗」はシロウじゃんｗｗｗｗ日本語できる中国人として、一見「これ日本人の命名じゃない？」という直接な衝撃ｗｗｗ
「凝雨」と「可琳」は実にいい。特別に「凝雨」は中国語でも立派な命名。美人予定。但し、皆さんの仰っていた通り、「闘」と「麹」は使わない。
って、中国人のあたしとして、「麹」も初見なんですの。
（辞書に調べて）ああ、「曲」の繁体字か。「曲」はいいね。

もっともっと探せ～(*´∀｀*)

P.S:

One advice (as shotgun sequencing):
You list 20~30 family names.
We pick up the usable family names for you. So you would be able to choose from these.
( I think it would not be as effective when dealing with first names, because the feeling of Chinese first names would change when they are matched with different family names.)

I think "mystic adept" has many talents. So I want use "斌". But there is a big problem. In modern Japan,  "斌" is not used. :em031

普通のダメ人間だよｗｗｗ

あたしにとって、「謝湛」と「謝湛才」のほうは素敵だわ。「湛」とは「海のように深い」、「湛才」とは「深い才能」でうまい話じゃん。
中国語の場合、「深い」人は陰キャラではなくて、逆に「賢くて優雅」という意味が込んだ。
「謝景」と「謝景運」はちょっと…普通かな？でもそれらも決して変な名前ではない。中国語の「景」のアクセントはちょっと低い…

個人的なオピニオンですが、「常遇春」より「常逢春」はいい。「遇」は「…との出会い」という意味で、「逢」は「…との素晴らしい出会い」という意味込み。より深い。

現代までよく使っている苗字：譚　葛　尹　仇　丁　成　盛　常　牛　寧　南宮
あんまり見えないが、中国人の苗字として使用される印象がよくある苗字：蒼（かっこいいジジキャラ感）　景（ある有名RPGの主人公の苗字。テレビドラマ化されたすごい奴なんだ）

Here's my opinion. The name you choose depends the background of that character. If you want some wuxia style, you know what they wrote in the damm Asia Book, choose some name from those novels. In this situation, those family name with two characters, 慕容 and 欧阳 are good examples. If you want more mystery, you can try whatever strange names. The Sixth Era itself is strange enough, a strange name is just nothing. I tried street name mixed by Russian in
 Latin alphabet, symbol and Chinese. (Well, you may need to give a simple pronunciation for it)

But keep in mind, the naming rules in modern China do not have too many difference with other countries. Using a good word to bless the child, describing person's physical  features, or just their birthday or ranking of children. I know some people will say the old rules that names in same seniority in the family should have a same character, but this not always happen now and probably less in 2075. So just use some simple surname and may be a good word as first name. That should be a easy way. Choose a first name of one character may be a better choice, since we have so many Chinese word with only one character and sounds nice. If you really want some more complex given names with two characters, the best way is to buy some book about Chinese Naming. They shouldn't be to difficult to find.

Another way of naming probably always usable is naming a character like Johnson (No Name, Nobody). You are a shadowrunner, and of course your SIN is a fake one. Fake SIN, fake name. Be a Nobody. (A interesting thing is the pronunciation of the most used Chinese name means nobody 张三 is really close to Johnson.)

　The regulation is basic 5E rule book and "Run & Gun". And PCs are in Seattle. The mystic adept must choice hermetic or shaman.

   I have play hermetic mystic adept in another campaign.

  So I want to play shaman. I make a background story.

 The ancestor of 謝湛才 immigrated to USA at late 19th century.

 He worked  at a railway construction. But a site director disliked the ancestor and abandoned him at desert.

 But  native americans helped him.

 After this incident, 謝’s clan is familiar to NA tradition.
