shade:
As creatures of the Plane of Shadow, shades are considered to be
of the outsider type. Shades must be of a nongood alignment.
All shades have the following powers when within shadows or
darkness. In well-lit surroundings (daylight or the radius of a
daylight spell) none of these powers function.
• Ability Scores: A shade’s Constitution and Charisma scores
increase by +2.
• Speed: Increases by 20 ft. (or 15 ft., if the character wears
medium or heavy armor).
• Armor Class: The shade gains a +4 deflection bonus to AC.
• Attacks and Damage: The shade gains a +2 competence bonus
on attacks and damage.
• Saves: The shade gains a +4 luck bonus on all saving throws.
• Skills: The character gains a +4 racial bonus on Listen and
Spot checks, and a +8 racial bonus on Hide and Move Silently
checks. He does not suffer skill check penalties due to darkness.
• Control Light (Sp): The shade can decrease the levels of light
within a 100-foot radius by a factor of 10% per level. For
characters and creatures dependent on light to see, this
decreases the effective range of vision for them by the same
percentage. For each 25% decrease in light, anyone within the
area gains a +1 circumstance bonus on Hide checks.
• Fast Healing 2.
• Invisibility (Sp): The shade can use this ability once per round
as a sorcerer of his level.
• Shadesight (Sp): The shade has 60-foot darkvision. He can see
normally through any darkness effects but not through fog,
invisibility, obscurement, and so on.
• Shadow Image (Sp): Three times per day, the shade can use this
spell-like ability (similar to the mirror image spell) as a sorcerer
of his level. This creates 1d4 figments of the shade, +1
per three levels.
• Shadow Stride (Sp): As often as once every 2 rounds, a shade
of 8th level or higher can vanish from his current location
and reappear in any shadowy area within 300 feet. This is a
move-equivalent action.
• Shadow Travel (Sp): If the shade is 12th level or higher, then
he can use teleport without error to reach a shadowy locale on
the same world or plane shift to access the Plane of Shadows.
A shade can shadow travel once per day.
• Spell Resistance: 11 + character level.
• Level Adjustment: +4. Shades are more powerful and gain
levels more slowly than the common races of Faerûn. Their
many bonuses and powers are hindered only by the fact that
they do not work in bright light. Shadovars do not create
shades from characters who are less than 5th level. See Table
1 in the Introduction for more information.
Shadow creature:
“Shadow” is a template that can be added to any corporeal
creature (referred to hereafter as the “base creature”). The
creature’s type changes to “magical beast.” It otherwise
uses all the base creature’s statistics and special abilities
except as noted below.
Speed: As base creature × 1 1/2.
Special Qualities: A shadow creature retains all the
special qualities of the base creature and also gains the
following ones:
• Cold resistance of 5 + 1 per HD, to a maximum of 20.
• Darkvision with a range of 60 feet.
• Low-light vision.
• Shadow Blend (Su): In any conditions other than full
daylight, a shadow creature can disappear into the
shadows, giving it nine-tenths concealment. Artificial
illumination, even a light or continual flame spell, does
not negate this ability. A daylight spell, however, will.
Shadow creatures also have one additional supernatural
ability for every 4 HD they possess (minimum of one)
chosen from the following list:
• +2 luck bonus on all saving throws.
• Cause fear once per day.
• Damage reduction 5/+1.
• Evasion.
• Mirror image one per day.
• Plane shift self to or from the Plane of Shadow once
per day.
• Regenerate 2 hit points per round (slain if brought to 0
hit points).
If the base creature already has one or more of these special
qualities, use the better value.
Skills: Same as the base creature, plus Move Silently
+6.
Feats: Same as the base creature.
3R update:Shadow Creature: The shadow blend supernatural ability
grants total concealment. Their optional supernatural abilities
include +2 luck bonus on saves, 1/day cause fear as a 5th-level
caster, damage reduction 5/magic, evasion (as the rogue class feature),
1/day mirror image as a 5th-level caster, 1/day plane shift as
15th-level caster (to or from Plane of Shadow only), fast healing 2.
They have a level adjustment of +2.
Shadow-Walker:
“Shadow-walker” is a template that can be applied to any humanoid
(referred to hereafter as the “base character”). It uses
all of the base character’s statistics and special abilities except
as noted here.
Special Attacks: A shadow-walker retains all the special attacks
of the base character. The shadow-walker also gains the
ability to manipulate shadows, granting her access to various
spell-like abilities based on her character level, as shown in the
table below. These spell-like abilities are as the spells cast by
a sorcerer of the base character’s level.

A shadow-walker cannot use any of her spell-like abilities in an
area of bright light (sunlight or the radius of a daylight spell).
Special Qualities: A shadow-walker retains all the base character’s
special qualities, and also gains those special qualities
listed below.
Light Blindness (Ex): Abrupt exposure to bright light (such
as sunlight or a daylight spell) blinds a shadow-walker for 1
round. In addition, she takes a –1 penalty on all attack rolls,
saves, and checks when operating in bright light.
Darkvision (Ex): The character gains darkvision with a 60-
foot range if she does not have darkvision already.
Abilities: Adjust from the base character as follows: Dex +2,
Con –2.
Skills: Shadow-walkers gain a +4 racial bonus on Hide checks.
Challenge Rating: Same as the base character +1.
Level Adjustment: Same as the base character +1.
