堪华斯的父亲斯汀·黑特（Sting Hater）是自由城富甲一方的商人。就像大部分富甲一方的商人的儿子一样，堪华斯从小接受了良好的教育，可是因为父亲不在身边，他并没有受到父亲的影响，从小到大，他不拘小节，更没有任何接手父亲产业的念头。
堪华斯过着醉生梦死的日子，把酒和女人当成是他的生活重心，直到他21岁生日。

堪华斯的21岁生日宴会上，他的父亲特意出席，并将堪华斯引荐给自由城商王柯凡·来阿克（Kalphan Riak）的女儿伊琳娜（Elena）。年方16的伊琳娜对堪华斯一见钟情，但是堪华斯却对年少轻狂、不谙世事的伊琳娜不感兴趣。

此时他的内心正被另一个女人占据着：安妮·沙迪安（Anne Thadian）。安妮是自由城议员马扎·沙迪安的女儿。身为高等精灵，安妮高贵的气质和婀娜的身材在堪华斯的众多女友中脱颖而出，是他恋恋不舍的对象。

时光推移，商场无常，堪华斯的家族事业陷入低谷。为了挽救产业，父亲催促堪华斯与伊琳娜成婚。堪华斯虽然心有所属，却不敢违抗父命。
可是不知轻重的堪华斯，在与伊琳娜订婚后，仍然偷偷与安妮见面。这让对堪华斯爱之入骨的伊琳娜勃然大怒。她将安妮与堪华斯捉奸在床，因为愤怒而对堪华斯道出两家联姻的另一重内幕：原来斯汀之所以在商业上有所成就，是由于他鲜为人知的感知他人想法的能力。来阿克家族为了能够得到这个血脉相传的能力，才决定将伊琳娜下嫁给堪华斯。
深爱着堪华斯的伊琳娜在受到背叛后，仍对堪华斯恋恋不舍，将他留在自己的府邸。伊琳娜则将安妮送上马车，派人弃尸荒野。

一夜过去以后，堪华斯所在的房间已经人去楼空。伊琳娜在愤怒中责骂着官邸守卫，但没有人记得昨夜发生了什么。
在自由城外的山林间，旅人曾经见过一座小小的坟墓，墓碑上用粗陋的字体刻着简单的几个字：
Anne -- She is remembered.
山里住着一位谜一样的居士。旅者们能见到居士在山里砍柴，他瘦弱的身躯背着重重的柴火，似乎时刻都会倒下一样。因此人们管他叫The Burdened Man。
But a man is not burdened by what he carries on his back, but rather, by the weight of his memories.
